Background. This event was more than 90 days old when we wrote this post. Prices, plan names or rules may have changed since; newer posts on the news page say so where we know.

Three cards: date 2025-09-15, about 40,000 Downdetector reports, outage described as brief.

The short answer

What changed?
No rule changed. Starlink had a brief outage early on 2025-09-15. The Register reported about 40,000 Downdetector reports before service came back, and said SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment.
When?
Happened 2025-09-15 (early morning UTC). Reported the same day. Background: more than 90 days old.
Who is affected?
Starlink users in many countries, according to the report. It was short, and service came back for most people quickly.
What should you do now?
Nothing to do about this past event. If you are new, keep your order confirmation and note your Payment Due Date so you know your return deadline.
What stays the same?
Starlink's Referral Program Terms, as we read them on 2026-10-05, still give a new customer one free month on the eligible plan they pick, credited to the second monthly bill. You still pay month one, still need to order the kit and plan on starlink.com through a current customer's link, and still need two full billing cycles on a high-speed plan (Standby doesn't count).

What the report says

The Register reported on 2025-09-15 that Starlink went down around the world for a short time, with roughly 40,000 reports logged on Downdetector before service was restored. It said a notice about the problem reportedly appeared on Starlink's website and was later removed, and that SpaceX did not answer a request for comment.

Unlike the July 2025 outage, no cause was published in the report we read. We are not going to guess one.

How it connects to the free month

It doesn't change anything about it. We list it because people deciding whether to keep Starlink in their first 30 days often look at reliability, and dated sources beat forum memories.

If an outage hits while you are in your first month, the practical steps are dull but useful: check the Starlink app for a network notice, write down the date and how long it lasted, and contact support through your account if it keeps happening. A short global outage is not, on its own, a reason to rush a cancellation, because you have the full return window to decide.

If you are in that window: the return window is 30 days from your Payment Due Date, not from the day you opened the box (see Is there a Starlink free trial?). The free month only lands on bill two if you keep a high-speed plan for two full cycles (see When the free month shows up). Use the eligibility rules to check the rest before you order.

What we don’t know yet

  • The cause. The report did not give one, and we found no Starlink statement.
  • Exactly how long US customers were offline. The report describes the outage as brief.
