Step-by-step guide

How to get the Starlink free month, step by step

Seven short steps. One thing to do in each. Most people who miss out slip on step 3 or 4.

Rules checked Against Starlink’s own help pages and terms. How we check

Short answer

Open a current customer’s referral link on the device you’ll order on, and finish the order on starlink.com in that same browser. Then pay bill 1 as normal and keep a full-speed plan. The credit comes off bill 2.

Before you start

  • A US service address where the dish will sit, or your home base for Roam.
  • Never had Starlink on any account, at any address.
  • A referral link from someone with Starlink at a US address.
  • A card and about 15 quiet minutes so you finish in one go, in one browser.

The seven steps

  1. Before anything else, 1 minute

    Check you qualify

Answer the five questions in the eligibility checker. It tells you straight away if a store kit, a past subscription or a non-US address would rule you out.

    Open the checker

  2. Before you order

Get a referral link from a current US customer

Any customer on a Residential or Roam plan has one in their Starlink account under Referrals. There’s no code to type: the link itself carries the free month.

  3. Order day

Open the link on the device you’ll order on

Tap or click it on the phone or computer where you’ll pay. Don’t copy it to another device or into the Starlink app, and don’t open it in a private window you’ll close halfway through.

    Why the same browser matters

The link is how starlink.com knows who referred you. Starlink doesn’t publish how it keeps track. If you open the link on your phone and pay on a laptop, the order may arrive without the referral. Then there’s no free month to apply. Starlink also doesn’t say whether a link opened in a browser carries into the app unverified, so we play safe.

  4. Order day, same session

Choose your plan and order on starlink.com, in that same browser

Enter your US service address. Starlink checks whether it can serve you there. Pick a Residential or Roam plan and pay. Starlink shows the eligible plans as you sign up.

“The Referred Subscriber must purchase a Starlink Kit and subscription directly from www.starlink.com. Signing up through any other channel is not eligible for a Reward, including, but not limited to, retail stores, unauthorized resellers, or a private transfer from a third party.”
From Referral Program Terms, US (starlink.com legal document DOC-1882-84808-83). Read .
  5. Delivery week

Set up the kit. Bill 1 is charged at full price.

Your first charge comes on the day you activate, or 7 days after delivery if that’s sooner. That’s your Payment Due Date. Paying month 1 in full is normal.

Exact rule: your first charge comes on the earliest of: the day you activate, 7 days after delivery, or 30 days after shipping if there's no delivery date (the 'Payment Due Date').

  6. Month 1

Look for the email, then preview bill 2

Starlink emails you when the free month is confirmed. In your account, preview your upcoming bill: month two should show as free.

  7. Months 1 and 2

Keep a full-speed plan through two full billing cycles

Don’t switch to Standby or cancel before bill 2. Starlink counts two full cycles on a full-speed plan before the referral is complete.

“The Referred Subscriber must maintain continuously subscribed and in good standing for two full monthly billing cycles in order for a Pending Referral to mature to an Eligible Referral.”
From Referral Program Terms, US (starlink.com legal document DOC-1882-84808-83). Read .

What happens after you order

  1. Order confirmation. Starlink emails a receipt and ships the kit.
  2. Bill 1 on your Payment Due Date. Full price. If Starlink can’t work at your place, you have 30 days from this date to return the kit for a refund.
  3. A “free month confirmed” email. Starlink’s help page says it sends one. Keep it.
  4. Bill 2, one month later. The credit is taken off. See the timeline.

Common reasons it fails

Each of these has cost someone their free month

We’ll add our own dated screenshots of each order screen here. Until then, this guide sticks to words: we don’t draw copies of starlink.com’s pages.

Questions people ask

Is there a Starlink promo code for the free month?
No code is involved. The free month is attached when you order through a current customer’s referral link on starlink.com. Starlink’s terms say no other referral method counts.
Can I order in the Starlink app instead?
Starlink’s help page says to use the link to purchase on starlink.com. Nothing we can find says a link opened in a browser carries over into the app. That’s unverified, so we’d finish in the same browser.
Can someone order it for me?
The free month is for the new subscriber, and the person sharing the link can’t place the order for you. Starlink’s referral terms bar referrers from handling orders. Order it yourself, on your own account.
Does the free month make the kit cheaper?
No. It’s one month of service credited on bill 2. The kit, any activation fee, shipping and tax are charged as normal.
