Troubleshooting

Bought the kit in a store, or ordered by phone?

This is the most common reason the free month never appears. Unfortunately there’s no fix after the fact. Here’s why, and what your options are.

Rules checked Against Starlink’s own help pages and terms. How we check

Short answer

The free month only applies when the kit and the plan are bought directly on starlink.com through a referral link. Kits from stores, resellers, private sales and account transfers don’t qualify.

Why it happens

Starlink tracks the referral from the moment you open the link and order online. A kit bought on a store shelf, through a reseller or second-hand was never part of that order. So there’s nothing for the free month to attach to.

“The Referred Subscriber must purchase a Starlink Kit and subscription directly from www.starlink.com. Signing up through any other channel is not eligible for a Reward, including, but not limited to, retail stores, unauthorized resellers, or a private transfer from a third party.”

What you can still do

  • Haven’t opened the box yet? Read the store’s return policy. kits bought from a store or reseller go back to that store, under its own policy, not to Starlink. If they’ll take it back, you can order on starlink.com through a link instead.
  • Already set it up? Keep it if it works well for you. The free month is one month, and it isn’t worth a lot of hassle or a restocking fee.
  • Ordered by phone? Ask Starlink support what your options are. Under the terms as written, the free month only applies to orders on starlink.com.

What won’t work

Activating a store kit after opening someone’s referral link, or asking the person who shared the link to “add” you. Starlink says no other referral method counts.

How to avoid it next time

Get the link first, open it on the device you’ll pay on, and order on starlink.com in that same browser. The step-by-step guide covers it.

Questions people ask

I bought the kit at a store. Can I activate it with someone’s referral link?
Starlink’s help page says kits bought from retailers or resellers aren’t eligible. A link used at activation doesn’t change where the kit was bought.
Can I return the store kit and order on starlink.com instead?
That depends on the store’s return policy, not Starlink’s. If the store will take it back and the free month matters to you, ordering on starlink.com through a link is the only route Starlink’s terms allow.
Does ordering by phone count as starlink.com?
Starlink’s terms say the kit and subscription must be bought directly from www.starlink.com, through the link. A phone order isn’t that. Order online yourself in the browser where you opened the link.
