The short answer
- What changed?
- Starlink had more than 12 million active customers in over 160 countries and territories, up from 10.3 million at the end of Q1 2026 and about 9 million at the end of 2025, according to a 2026-08-04 Crypto Briefing report citing Space.com.
- When?
- Reported 2026-08-04, for the period ending Q2 2026.
- Who is affected?
- Nobody's rules change. Growth matters most to people in busy areas, where Starlink uses congestion charges and waitlists to manage demand.
- What should you do now?
- Nothing to do. If you are in a busy area, check your address on starlink.com for any surcharge before ordering.
- What stays the same?
- Starlink's Referral Program Terms, as we read them on 2026-10-05, still give a new customer one free month on the eligible plan they pick, credited to the second monthly bill. You still pay month one, still need to order the kit and plan on starlink.com through a current customer's link, and still need two full billing cycles on a high-speed plan (Standby doesn't count).

The numbers
Crypto Briefing, citing Space.com, reported more than 12 million active Starlink subscribers worldwide as of Q2 2026, in more than 160 countries and territories. It said that was "up from 10.3 million at the end of Q1, which itself was up from roughly 9 million at the end of 2025." The figures are global, not US-only.
The report also mentioned analyst projections for year-end. Those are forecasts, not facts, and we don't repeat them here.
Why it matters to a new US customer
More customers on the same cells can mean more congestion until capacity catches up. Starlink manages that partly with one-time demand surcharges on new Residential orders in busy areas (see our January 2026 background post). In the first half of 2026, Ookla also found Starlink speeds improving in most states (see our Ookla post).
None of this changes the free month. It is still one month on your chosen eligible plan, credited to bill two, for new customers who order on starlink.com through a link. Check the rules, then use the 30-day return window to judge the service at your own address.
For the order steps, see How to get the free month.
What a customer count does not tell you
A global total says nothing about your neighborhood. Starlink capacity is local: the same network can be quiet in one county and busy in the next. The only test that answers the question for your home is using the service there during the return window.
What we don’t know yet
- How many of the 12 million are in the US. The report gives a global number.
- We have not read a SpaceX statement for this figure directly; it comes from a press report citing Space.com.
