The short answer
- What changed?
- Only Roam Unlimited now includes travel outside your home country or region, capped at 30 days (down from 60), with ID-based travel registration. Roam 100GB and 300GB work at home only. The US, Canada and their territories now count as one region. Reported by SatelliteInternet.com and iPhone in Canada on 2026-07-16.
- When?
- New customers: from 2026-07-14. Existing customers: from 2026-08-17. Both dates per the 2026-07-16 reports.
- Who is affected?
- Anyone ordering a Roam plan, including Mini buyers, who plans to use it outside the US and Canada. Road trips within the US and Canada are not affected.
- What should you do now?
- If you'll travel abroad with Starlink, check that the Roam plan you pick at checkout is Roam Unlimited, and read the travel-registration step. For US and Canada use only, any Roam plan works.
- What stays the same?
- Starlink's Referral Program Terms, as we read them on 2026-10-05, still give a new customer one free month on the eligible plan they pick, credited to the second monthly bill. You still pay month one, still need to order the kit and plan on starlink.com through a current customer's link, and still need two full billing cycles on a high-speed plan (Standby doesn't count). All three Roam plans are still on the eligible-plan list.

The new travel rules, as reported
SatelliteInternet.com reported that "100GB and 300GB plans no longer work internationally," that Roam Unlimited allows 30 days outside the home country, and that customers who go over must return home, upgrade to a Priority plan, or move their account. It said international users must complete travel registration with legal name, nationality, date of birth and a passport or other government photo ID, plus a selfie.
iPhone in Canada reported that the US and Canada are now treated as one home region, so crossing the border doesn't start the 30-day count. It described the 30 days as a per-trip limit.
What it means for the free month
The free month is unaffected in principle. Roam 100GB, Roam 300GB and Roam Unlimited all remain on the eligible list in the terms we read on 2026-10-05. The credit is still one month of whichever Roam plan you choose, on bill two.
But the plan you need may now be more expensive. If you were going to buy a Mini on Roam 100GB for a trip to Mexico, that plan no longer covers it. Pick the plan that fits your travel first, then check the free-month rules on the eligibility page.
One more point: the referral terms require your service address to be in the same country as the person whose link you use. Travel is different from your service address, but if you plan to base the service outside the US, read Service address outside the US.
What stays the same at home
Inside the US and Canada nothing changed for Roam users. Our plans page shows each Roam plan and what one month is worth.
What we don’t know yet
- Whether going past the 30-day limit during your first two billing cycles affects the referral. The terms require a high-speed plan for two full cycles; they don't mention travel limits.
- We have not read Starlink's own Roam travel help article for this post; the details come from two press reports that agree.
