Key takeaways
- There’s no free-trial plan. Starlink’s own help center says the 30-day trial “is not a 30-day free trial but rather a trial of the Starlink hardware.”
- The 30-day window is a return right: return an undamaged kit bought on starlink.com within 30 days of the Payment Due Date for a full refund, including the first month's fee. Shipping isn’t refunded.
- The referral free month isn’t month one. It’s applied as a credit to your second monthly bill; you pay the first month.
- Starlink’s free-kit option with a 12-month commitment is discontinued for new activations, its help center says.
- Free Mini offers you may read about are for existing Residential customers, not new orders.
Starlink doesn’t offer a free trial. What people call the “Starlink free trial” is a 30-day return window: you pay for the kit and your first month, and if you return an undamaged kit bought on starlink.com within 30 days of the Payment Due Date, you get a full refund. Starlink’s own help center says it “is not a 30-day free trial but rather a trial of the Starlink hardware.”
The other thing people call free is the referral free month, which new customers get as a credit on their second bill. Below are nine claims you’ll see online, each checked against Starlink’s own terms and help pages.
The claims, at a glance
1. “Starlink has a 30-day free trial”
Verdict: no. It’s a paid return window.
Starlink’s help center answers this directly under “How does the 30 day trial work?”:
The 30-day trial mentioned on the Starlink website does not indicate that the first month of service is free, as it is not a 30-day free trial but rather a trial of the Starlink hardware.
It adds that your first month’s bill “is billed upon activation (or 7 days after your Starlink is delivered).” The Terms of Service set the rule: return an undamaged kit bought on starlink.com within 30 days of the Payment Due Date for a full refund, including the first month's fee. They also say shipping and handling charges are non-refundable, even on a return. Section 1.4 of the Terms calls this the “initial trial period specified in Section 6.3,” which is where the word “trial” comes from.
So you can try Starlink and get your money back, minus shipping, but you pay first. Our free trial page compares it side by side with the free month.
2. “Your first month is free”
Verdict: not quite. The credit comes off bill two.
The referral free month is real, but Starlink’s help article is precise about when: applied as a credit to your second monthly bill; you pay the first month. Its own table says “You pay for the first month” and that the credit is “deducted from your next invoice.” Our guide to when the free month shows up puts dates on it.
3. “Everyone gets a free month”
Verdict: no. Only new customers who order the right way.
The free month has conditions. The main ones: you are not, and have never been, a Starlink subscriber; the order must be placed with a customer's unique referral link; no other referral method counts; the kit and plan are bought kit and subscription bought directly on starlink.com; stores, unauthorized resellers and private transfers don't qualify; your service address must be in the same country as the referrer's. Check yours with our eligibility page.
4. “The Starlink dish is free”
Verdict: not any more, as a giveaway.
Starlink’s help center describes a 12-month Residential option where new customers in select areas got “a Starlink Kit at no cost” in exchange for a 12-month commitment. The same article now says: “This service plan is discontinued for new activations,” and “This promotion is no longer available to new customers.”
What new Residential customers get instead is a rented kit: new Residential orders are kit rentals, not purchasespress report. A rental isn’t free hardware. If you cancel, a rented kit must go back in good condition within 30 days of cancelling, or you're charged the kit's full price. Our guide to returning rented vs bought kits covers the deadlines.
5. “You get a free Starlink Mini”
Verdict: only for some existing customers.
Starlink’s Optional Mini Kit for Travel is “available only to customers in select countries with an active Residential plan,” with “no monthly hardware rental cost.” Press reports in September 2026 said the invitation reached more Residential tiers, by email. Either way, it’s an offer for people who already have Starlink, not a new-customer trial. Our Mini guide covers ordering a Mini as a new customer.
6. “Try it for 30 days, return it, and still keep the free month”
Verdict: no.
The two benefits sit on different dates. The return window closes 30 days after the Payment Due Date. The free month is credited on bill two, about a month after the Payment Due Date. Return the kit and you get month one back, but there’s no bill two to credit. Our guide to the free month and the return window shows both on one calendar.
7. “Discounted first months are a free trial”
Verdict: no. They’re a discount, where offered.
Starlink’s help center says “in select areas, new Starlink customers can receive discounted service pricing for a fixed period of time (e.g., 6 or 12 months).” After that, “your service plan pricing will be return to full price.” It’s “only valid for new customers,” applies to one service line, and shows “at the time you place your order on starlink.com.” Customers who change plan, cancel or are suspended “will lose their promotional pricing.” A lower price isn’t a free trial, and Starlink doesn’t say how it combines with the referral credit.
8. “Store kits have the same trial”
Verdict: no. The store’s policy applies.
The Terms of Service return right covers kits “purchased on starlink.com.” For store kits, kits bought from a store or reseller go back to that store, under its own policy. And kits from resellers, retailers or an account transfer are not eligible. See store or phone orders.
9. “Roam has a free trial”
Verdict: no. Roam orders get the same 30-day return window as any kit bought on starlink.com, and the three Roam plans are on the free-month list. There’s no separate free Roam trial in Starlink’s terms.
How to check a claim yourself
When you see “free” next to Starlink, ask three questions:
- Free when? Month one, bill two, or “refundable if returned”?
- Free for whom? New customers, existing customers, select areas?
- Says who? Is the claim on starlink.com, in Starlink’s help center or legal pages, or only on a third-party page?
If a page promises a free trial and asks for your card on a site that isn’t starlink.com, stop. Our guide to spotting the real site shows what to check.
A worked example
Jordan reads “Starlink 30-day free trial” on a forum and orders on starlink.com through a friend’s link, on Residential 100 Mbps at $55/mo.
- Day 0 (Payment Due Date): Jordan pays month one. Nothing is free yet.
- Days 1–25: Jordan tests the service at home, using our 30-day test plan.
- If Jordan returns the kit by day 30: the kit and month one are refunded; shipping isn’t. No free month.
- If Jordan keeps it: bill two carries a one-month credit, worth $55/mo.
That’s the real version of the “free trial”: a refundable first month, then one free month if you stay.
Why these claims spread
Most of these claims aren’t made up from nothing. They come from real offers that were once true, or from wording that is easy to misread:
- The word “trial” is in Starlink’s own terms. Section 1.4 talks about “the initial trial period specified in Section 6.3,” and Starlink’s site has used “30-day trial.” Readers hear “free trial.”
- Free-kit offers did exist. The 12-month commitment option gave a kit “at no cost” in select areas, and older articles still describe it.
- Free Mini offers exist now, for existing Residential customers. Headlines don’t always say who they’re for.
- “First month free” is a natural way to describe a free month, even though it lands on the second bill.
When you read any of these, check the date of the article and whether it links to a Starlink page you can open today.
What a real “try before you commit” plan looks like
Put together, Starlink’s rules give you a fair way to test the service:
- Order on starlink.com, so the 30-day return right and the free month are both open to you.
- Write down your Payment Due Date. Both clocks run from it.
- Test in weeks one to three: placement, busy evening hours, video calls, whatever you actually need.
- Decide by about day 25, leaving time to start a return before day 30.
- Keep the box and parts until you’ve decided, so a return is easy.
That’s as close to a free trial as Starlink gets, and it’s a reasonable one: if it doesn’t work, you get the kit price and month one back, less shipping.
Common mistakes
- Expecting no charge on day one. Month one is billed at activation or 7 days after delivery.
- Counting the free month as part of the trial. It comes after the return window closes.
- Hunting for a free dish offer that has ended.
- Buying in a store expecting the same 30 days and the free month.
What we don’t know
Starlink doesn’t say how promotional pricing and the referral credit interact on the same order, or exactly which areas see promotional prices. Checkout shows what applies at your address.
What to do next
- Read our free trial page for the side-by-side comparison.
- Check you qualify for the free month with the eligibility checker.
- If you order, note your Payment Due Date: both the return window and bill two count from it.
